MALJA:n jatko-opiskelupaikkojen haku

MALJA on yhdistymässä Matemaattisen analyysin ja sen sovellusten tutkijakoulun kanssa, joten tutkijakoulun toiminta nykymuodossa päättyy vuoden 2009 lopussa. Haussa on kuitenkin yksi tutkijakoulupaikka loppuajaksi 1.6.-31.12.2009. Jatkorahoitus 1.1.2010 alkaen uudessa Matematiikan ja sovellusten tutkijakoulussa pyritään järjestämään asettamalla nyt tutkijapaikalle valittava etusijalle kaikkien logiikan ja algebran hakijoiden joukossa.

Yleistä

MALJA eli Matemaattisen logiikan ja algebran tutkijakoulu on opetusministeriön rahoittama tutkijakoulu. Tutkijakoulun toimintaan osallistuvat Tampereen yliopiston matematiikan, tilastotieteen ja filosofian, Helsingin yliopiston matematiikan ja tilastotieteen, Tampereen Teknillisen yliopiston matematiikan sekä Oulun yliopiston matemaattisten tieteiden laitokset. Tutkijakoulun vastuullinen johtaja on professori Lauri Hella (TaY). MALJA tukee matemaattisen logiikan ja algebran jatko-opiskelua myöntämällä tutkijanpaikkoja väitöskirjan tekemiseen. Kaudella 2007-2009 tutkijapaikkoja on yhteensä viisi, ja tutkijoille maksetaan UPJ:n mukaista palkkaa.

MALJA:n tukemat matematiikan alat ovat joukko-oppi, malliteoria, logiikka ja analyysi, äärellisten mallien teoria ja algebra. Jatko-opiskelusta tutkijakoulussa kiinnostuneiden toivotaan tutustuvan tutkijakoulun tieteelliseen profiiliin ja ohjaajiin pääsivun http://mathstat.helsinki.fi/logic/MALJA/ kautta.

Uudet hakijat

Uusilla hakijoilla tarkoitetaan niitä, jotka eivät ole aiemmin jättäneet hakemusta MALJA:aan. Uudet hakijat voivat hakea MALJA:n tutkijankoulutuspaikkoja vapaamuotoisella hakemuksella, josta tulee ilmetä seuraavat tiedot:

hakijan nimi ja yhteystiedot
pro gradun tai diplomityön nimi ja ohjaaja
jatko-opintojen tämänhetkinen ohjaaja tai toivomus ohjaajaksi
jatko-opintojen aihepiiri
ovatko jatko-opinnot vasta alkamassa tai niiden tähänastinen kulku
jatko-opintojen tähänastinen ja tiedossa oleva rahoitus
jo jatko-opintonsa aloittaneilta arvio, kuinka kauan opinnot vielä kestävät

kopio tutkintotodistuksesta

Vanhat hakijat

Vanhan hakijan ei tarvitse jättää hakemusta uudestaan, vaan riittää, että hän ilmoittaa olevansa käytettävissä (kirjallisesti tai sähköpostitse). Hakemusta voi tarvittaessa täydentää.

Hakemuksen jättö

Hakemuksen voi laatia suomeksi, ruotsiksi tai englanniksi. Hakija voi hakemuksessaan halutessaan myös selvittää matemaattisia suunnitelmiaan ja tavoitteitaan. Hakijoille tiedotetaan päätöksestä viimeistään joulukuun alussa. Tutkijakouluun valituille tehdään jatko-opintojen rahoitussuunnitelma väitöskirjan suunniteltuun valmistumisaikaan saakka, kuitenkin korkeintaan neljäksi vuodeksi. Hakuajasta ilmoitetaan tarkemmin myöhemmin.

MALJA: Call for applications

MALJA and the graduate school of Mathematical analysis and its applications will be fused in the beginning of the year 2010. However, there is one position open for the remaining period 1.6.-31.12.2009. The funding of MALJA ends 31.12.2009, but the student chosen for this position will be given priority among applicants in logic and algebra for the new graduate school of Mathematics and applications, which starts in the beginning of 2010.

MALJA is the acronym for the Graduate School in Mathematical Logic and Algebra financed by the Ministry of Education of Finland. The participating units of MALJA are the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Philosophy at the University of Tampere , Department of Mathematics and Statistics at University of Helsinki, Deparment of Mathematics at the Technical University of Tampere and the Department of mathematical sciences at the University of Oulu. The head of the graduate school is Professor Lauri Hella (University of Tampere). MALJA supports doctoral studies in mathematical logic and algebra in Finland by providing positions for PhD students. For the years 2007-2009 MALJA has funding for five positions.

The fields supported by MALJA are set theory, model theory, logic and analysis, finite model theory, and algebra. Students interested in postgraduate studies in the graduate school are advised to visit the homepage http://mathstat.helsinki.fi/logic/MALJA/ for the mathematical profile and potential supervisors of the relevant research groups.

New applicants

Here, new applicant means one who has not applied for MALJA before. One may apply for a position in MALJA by an informal application containing the following information:

the name and contact information (especially the email address) of the applicant
the title of Master's Thesis or equivalent, with the name of the supervisor
the current supervisor (if already studying in Finland in the appropriate groups) or a request for the supervisor
field of the postgraduate studies
information if the postgraduate studies of the applicant are just about to start, or about the history of the studies so far
the financial support obtained for the postgraduate studies so far
an estimate how long the studies will take, if already begun

The application should include the following appendices

short curriculum vitae (with publications, if any)
copy of the certificate of the Master's degree or equivalent
list of the courses taken by the applicant for the M.Sc degree (or equivalent) with marks; this should be an official listing from the university registers if available

Old applicants

Old applicants need not re-submit the application, it is enough to reconfirm that one wants to be reconsidered (by mail or email). A completion of the application is possible, if needed.

Submission

The application should be in Finnish, Swedish or English. The applicant may include an explanation of her/his plans and goals related to mathematics studies. The applicants will be notified of the decisions taken in early December. The chosen student will receive a plan how their studies are financed till the fulfillment of the degree, but not for more than four years. The application should be sent by ordinary mail to
